Building a VPN-like service for Japan — what features would you want?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been involved in launching a VPN-like service that tries to fix some of the internet headaches people here run into.

A few examples of problems I’ve noticed (and tried to solve):

  • Home servers & DS-Lite: A lot of ISPs use DS-Lite, which makes it impossible to open IPv4 ports. One feature implemented is IPv4→IPv6 forwarding so people can still run a home server.

  • Slow downloads & dropped packets: Connections here often feel slower than they should, with packet loss or bad routes to overseas servers. So we a proxy setup that uses more aggressive congestion control to improve download speeds.

  • Accessing foreign sites: Many foreigners here can’t easily access their home country’s Streaming, banks, or government sites. So users can route traffic through overseas exit nodes to get around that and access iPlayer, Netflix, etc, but proxying them all through Japan to keep the connections fast.

These are the pain points I’ve focused on so far, but I’d really like to hear from others:

👉 What internet or VPN frustrations have you had in Japan?
👉 If you already use VPNs here, what annoys you or what’s missing?

Any ideas, feedback, or experiences would be super helpful!
