Hello everyone. I’m new to this subReddit and I’m not even native Japanese. I just recently got a job offer from a company in Nagasaki and they’re paying 250,000 jpy monthly and 3.5 mil jpy in-hand yearly. Is this enough amount for a single dude to live in Nagasaki?
With CTC it goes to 4.5mil. But they haven’t specified what all is included in CTC. They’ve given that it has health checkups, shareholder benefits, employee discounts. I do want this job. I’m slightly worried about whether I’ll be able to manage expense, that too considering this is my first job after university.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

after taxes, yes.
if not them realistically you’ll be left with 100k a month and that’s really tough
Yes
I live alone in Tokyo with 68’000 yen rent and have a 250’000 salary I can even save up to 30’000 a month and living without restraint on food etc…
I don’t know for Nagasaki, but living cost are probably less than Tokyo so I would say you should be ok !
For a first job out of university, it’s about average for Japan.
You should expect ¥208k per month after tax in your first year (plus another ¥412k per year in overtime and bonus), and then ¥198k per month after tax in subsequent years (plus ¥384k per year in overtime and bonus).
You can expect ¥50-70k per month for rent (although location, size and quality can change this considerably, it’s a good guess middle-ground for a 1LDK – 1 bedroom, a Living/Dining/Kitchen room). You can expect to pay 1 month for security deposit, 1 month for key money (aka a payment to the landlord to let you rent from them), 1 month for the estate agent’s fee, and half a month for a guarantor fee. That will be 3 or 4 times the monthly rent to actually move into a place. You *might* get most of your security deposit back. Take note that you will probably need to pay a 1-month’s-rent contract renewal fee every 2 years, so budget for 25 months of rent per 24 month period.
Utilities (gas, water, electricity, internet, phone) will be ¥10-20k per month depending on your usage. Aircon will be your biggest variable here, so expect winter to be lower and summer to be higher.
Food will be your largest variable cost. Some people spend ¥20k per month, some spend ¥100k per month. Depends entirely on your taste. Assume a budget of ¥50k per month and see how it goes.
After all that, you should end up with ¥60-120k per month to save and have fun. Before doing anything wild, build up an emergency fund of around 6 months rent, utilities and food. It turns an expected cost into an annoyance instead of a problem.
To find a place to rent (or to see current prices vs floorplans), check out [Lifull Home’s](https://www.homes.co.jp/). Use their commute-time calculator (「通勤・通学時間から」, with a clock logo) against where your office will be.
It’s all relative, but ignore people who say it’s “average”.
Average for locals in Japan means they live with family and aren’t paying rent, utilities etc and might even get pocket money. They have access to a far larger job market and greater opportunities for promotion, which is why they put up with low wages at the start of a career. There are also added expenses of being an immigrant and you lack the money saving knowledge of a local.
Being content with average is dangerous long-term for an immigrant on a visa. You’re not saving the majority of your wage like a local is and probably also not growing a career or a decent pension. All of which you need to be doing.
Yes you’ll be fine with that. Where in nagasaki? Rent can be as low as 30,000 depending on where you’re looking
As a single, you can survive on that amount but it is very tight if you are someone who eats out, travel home once or twice a year or go out every weekend. If you’re planning to marry with kids here, that’s poverty wage.
