Looking for a new ISP

Apologies in advance for the long post.

I’ve just moved into a new house, and as a result had to sign up for a new internet plan. My previous mansion had a built-in plan, with gigabit ethernet to each unit. It was actually pretty decent, with full ipv4 support.

Unfortunately, I signed up for Nuro’s 2g fibre plan, and after it was installed, I realised that the NSD-G1000TS ONU they use uses map-e for IPoE. It makes it impossible to use my own routers (Asus routers running AsusWRT firmware). DMZ is disabled on the ONU, and there seems to be absolutely no workaround to it.

I don’t necessarily need a static ip, but need to have full control over my local network, not being forced to use the router they provide. I want to be able to route traffic, map ports, assign my own DNS servers etc. All things that are disabled with Nuro.

It seems like the majority of ISPs nowadays are using some form of IPoE, and are phasing out PPPoE. I’ve also heard the remaining ISPs that support PPPoE can get rather congested during peak times, with pretty slow speeds. The transition to ipv6 with IPoE seems to alleviate congestion. Unfortunately, it seems most Japanese ISPs have decided they need to use a completely different system compared with other countries, therefore a lot of non-Japanese routers don’t seem to work. (map-e, ds-lite, etc).

AsusWRT firmware I currently use seems to support ds-lite, and a few other IPoE protocols, but no map-e. Some people have found ways getting map-e working with OpenWRT, but as far as I know it hasn’t been tested with Nuro. It seems there would still be no way to disable routing on the NSD-G1000TS either way.

I’m not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience lately, or has found a solution with Nuro, or can suggest an ISP that might work better for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
