Is it possible to apply for foreign driver license conversion in a prefecture other than yours?

Is it possible to apply for driver license conversion in another prefecture if I live in chiba?

I went to apply for driver license conversion from a foreign license today and the next available date for driving and written tests is in March, 2026. 6 months. Compared to how they did this in Gunma, this is insane. Is it possible for me to try to do a driver test/license conversion in a different prefecture, even though I live in chiba?

  1. No, you have to apply at the driver’s license center that has jurisdiction over your registered address. And you’ll need a copy of your juminhyo so lying isn’t going to work.

    I don’t know if this will still work but at one time people were known to get a friend to let them register at their address temporarily then switch back after they did the conversion.

  3. No, I think that is just one of the negatives of living in Kanto. Everything takes long, PR, naturalization, driver license stuff, residence card renewal, etc.
