Basic question about hirangana characters

I am trying to study japanese using Duolingo and Tae Kim's guide to japanese book and noticed some characters are slightly different. For instance, in duolingo, ki is written as き but in Kim's book, it is written as き but the lower part is fully connected so it requires one less stroke. The せ is also slightly different so I am not sure which one to follow.
Thanks.

  1. It’s like the difference between handwriting ‘a’ vs ‘a’ on a computer or typewriter font.
