Tips and etiquette for walking with a toddler in Japan

I’m an international student currently studying in Japan, living here with my wife and our 14-month-old daughter. I really love how organized and considerate people are in Japan, and I always try to be respectful of the local customs.

My daughter is usually fine in the stroller, but sometimes she suddenly wants to get off and walk by herself, even in supermarkets, train stations, or on the sidewalk. I always try to make sure we don’t block others, but I still worry it might be considered impolite or inconvenient (meiwaku).

Also, what about giving small snacks in public? Sometimes it helps calm her down, but I’m worried it might be considered rude or make a mess, especially if crumbs fall while she’s eating in the stroller or while walking.

Any tips or insight on what’s considered polite or appropriate when going out with a baby in Japan would be really appreciated. 🙏
