Hi all.
I arrived in Japan just under a month ago and started my job here last week.
When I registered at city hall I was told I needed to enrol in NHI, which I did. However, they didn’t tell me anything about nenkin, but I’ve recently found out that I should have enrolled in that too.
Having started my new job, I am being enrolled in shakai hoken instead (I believe this applies from the day of my 入社, so starting 10/01?).
My question is, do I need to go to the city office to retroactively pay any missed kokumin nenkin (or apply for an exemption as at the time I was technically unemployed) even though the time I was unenrolled only adds up to 3 weeks and I received no income in that time?
Also, do I need to withdraw from NHI myself, or is that handled as part of the shakai hoken process? I will most likely have to go and pay off any outstanding balance anyway (my payment slips still haven’t arrived), but if anyone could answer my question about nenkin too, I’d be really grateful, as the trouble is I’ve now started work and will have to take time off to visit the city office.
Many thanks in advance!
