My wife and I will be in Hokkaido 12/29 – 1/3 and then are flying down to Osaka on 1/3 and leave back to the states on 1/16 from tokyo.
That gives us ~12 days to work with between Kyoto/Osaka and tokyo
Given it'll be January, I imagine it'll be gorgeous, but cold. How would you recommend we split our time given our interests? What day trips should we make from Kyoto? Thinking of staying in Osaka for a day and then going to Kyoto as our home base but open to recommendations since we want to do day trips (Nara, Kobe for sure)

- onsen vibes (Hakone?)
- historical monuments/views
- sake
- Seeing sumo wrestlers would be cool
We don't really want to do "modern" tourist things, if that makes sense. No universal studios, game shows, clubs, etc.
We'll have 1 checked bag, 2 carryons/personals
Flying ANA and Peach airlines if you have any tips, first time traveling on those.
