Title speaks for itself. This is my first job in Tokyo and during the interview my manager and the HR mentioned that I can work remotely 2x a week. However post joining it seems my manager removed it completely just for me. It seems unfair and it’s because he said that he wants me to be trained in office. However whenever I am in office I only get trained for a maximum of 30 minutes each day. Even such trainings I feel could be conducted online / squeezed to fit into the three days of working in office. I have mentioned to my manager that it takes me 1hour15mins one way to commute to office on a good day which is the reason why I really needed remote work. However the advice he gave me was to move closer to office. As someone who worked in Europe this is extremely uncomfortable for me. I have asked HR about this and the HR who interviewed me remembers mentioning remote work 2x a week. Other new joiners who joined in other departments are able to start remote work since the day they are onboarded. Now it’s been 5 weeks and my mental health is at an all time low because I feel cheated of my feelings. My immune system is weakened and I have caught a very bad cold unfortunately which means I will need to go on medical leave tomorrow. I can’t even breathe without feeling pain now and I’m pretty sure my manager is going to go crazy from me going on medical leave. Any advise for this broken salaryman who is going to die at this point?
editing post to make commute time and contract more straightforward sorry for the confusion
Adding to above yes remote work is stated in the contract but at the same time they have a disclaimer stating that the manager has the power to remove it. Actually all of my team members including my manager himself does remote work 2x a week, sometimes even more. Hence I really feel bullied. My manager and I are of the same nationality and he reverse discriminated me saying that he doesn’t want to give me remote work ‘in case people thinks he’s being biased to someone of the same nationality’. I’m not sure how to feel about this but in Europe I’m sure you can’t make any remarks on nationality else you’ll get sued. Hence after this incident I started recording our one to ones.
