Stay in HR or chase my IT dream at 30?

Hello everyone,

I’m 30 years old and I’ve been working in Japan for almost 10 years now. Currently, I work as an HR Team Lead with an annual salary of around 4.5 million yen. Honestly, I live comfortably.

I graduated with a degree in BSIT, and I’ve always had a passion for IT. My goal has always been to work in the IT industry, but due to financial reasons, I decided to go to Japan and work in a non-IT job to earn money quickly. I also hold a JLPT N1 certification, so I’m somewhat proficient in Japanese.

Now, my dream of working in IT, specifically as a programmer is catching up with me. During my free time, I try to study programming again. I’ve already created some in-house Python programs that I use in my daily work. Currently, I’m studying web development for my next project, which I plan to present to my company.

To be honest, I’m not happy with my current job because it’s not really what I dreamed of doing. I often find myself thinking, “What if I pursued IT? Maybe I can do it.” But leaving my current job is hard because of the salary and because I’m on the frontlines now the only way is up, there’s no one blocking me, and I have a lot of freedom in my work. I get to decide what tasks to do without pressure from others.

I know the IT field is crowded right now, and with AI developments, it makes me even more fearful about making a career change.

Should I just stick with my current work, or should I at least try to pursue what I truly love, which is programming?

(By the way, I prefer backend development because I’m not very strong in frontend)

I’d really appreciate any advice from you all.

Thank you so much!
