There were more than 1,500 bear incidents this week…

Did bears really start appearing more often or is it just the media?

  1. Where are you sourcing your data? Does the government offer public APIs for this or are you crawling several city websites?

  2. Neighboring Yamagata not appearing either. Feels like the APIs are all over the place here.

  3. Summer was too hot, not enough rain. No wildlife got enough food to prepare for winter.

They’re desperate and looking for food so they’ll survive.

    It’s our fault.

  4. In Saitama, there were reports of bear sightings in urban areas the day before yesterday.

  5. When I read incidents I thought it was people being attacked. Looking at the website it’s just people spotting them

  6. Incidents meaning someone saw a bear? Or incidents where something actually happened?

  7. Coming from a country where we don’t have bears in the wildlife I was visiting Sendai and apparently there was a bear sighting not long ago in the park area heading up a tourist spot. I was never more alert and wary walking back down in the dusk and was expecting something big to pop up anytime.

Heard some rustling noises and was ready to run for it and saw in the distance, a gardener nonchalantly sweeping the grounds… are locals just really chill about bears?

  8. More appearances. Bear populations have been increasing. They’ve doubled in Hokkaido in the last two or three decades.

  9. Just as we’re moving into the middle of the forest 😵‍💫 hopefully they go into hibernation soon

  10. The media is bored and know bear stories gets clicks and views.

The vast majority of bear sightings don’t end up with attacks but it’s major news if you see one apparently.
