The IRS is phasing out paper checks and I don’t have a US bank account, any other options?

Up until now I've been receiving my tax return payments via paper checks and cashing them in using SMBC Prestia.

My tax preparer just informed me that the IRS is moving away from paper checks effective as of September 30th. (Would've been nice to know in advance but it is what it is)

Is there any way I can open up an online US bank account that doesn't require me to be physically there?

I have no immediate family members in the US, except for an uncle. I do have some friends in the US I could ask for help if needed.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

  1. A Wise account that can receive USD should work. Alternatively, you could look into the State Department Federal Credit Union, which is known to open accounts for Americans living outside America.

  2. The state deparment credit union suggestion is a good one.

And well, social security has no problem wiring payments to expats around the world–my ‘check’ goes thru citibank NYC. They certainly send the wire, and handle the conversion to yen, too (at a good f/x rate). And there are no wire fees deducted, so either SS is considered by Citi to be high status customer(!) and they waive the fees, or maybe SS considers it a cost of sending payments.

Point being, if the IRS is doing away with checks, they may sort of piggyback onto how SS works. (One can hope!) So be ready with all of the SWIFT details for your chosen bank here

  3. curious, I just received a tax refund check and was wondering if I could deposit it here… I have s SMBC account, how difficult was it?
