A town council member who was caught on security camera footage shortchanging an unmanned store by 90 yen resigns from his council position, saying, “I made a mistake in payment, but will take responsibility.”

Toru Kanoka (75), a member of the Kaiyo Town Assembly in Tokushima Prefecture, resigned from his position on the 11th. It was discovered that Kanoka had underpaid 90 yen at an unmanned sales booth in June. He submitted his resignation to Chairman Hisahiro Higashi on the 10th. He cited "personal reasons" as the reason for his resignation.

According to the town council secretariat, when Mr. Kanoka bought 700 yen worth of vegetables at an unmanned store in June, he only paid 610 yen. The management company, which checked the security camera footage, consulted the police. No report of the incident was filed, and Mr. Kanoka paid compensation for the damage.
