Hi everyone,
I live in Tokyo and currently wait for an Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa approval in Japan. My employer is a Japanese company, and I already work full-time remotely for them. This is already a grey-zone, since my current visa status is the working holiday visa, but so far it’s working okay. I expect the immigration bureau to get back to me about the visa soon.
For health reasons (I will be undergoing ADHD diagnosis and treatment in Germany), I’m planning to stay in Germany for a few weeks (approx. around 2 months) However, I would like to keep my Japanese residence card and visa active, remain registered at a japanese address, and continue working remotely for the same Japanese company.
Has anyone done something similar — i.e., temporarily living abroad while still being employed by a Japanese company under this visa type?
My questions are:
Does the immigration bureau consider this a violation if I’m outside Japan for several months but still working for the same Japanese employer?
Will I have problems when re-entering the country?
As long as I keep my address, taxes and employment etc. is this usually accepted?
Any first-hand experiences, lawyer advice, or anecdotes would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
