UPDATE: Child left in same diaper for 6.5 hours at daycare

Thank you everyone who offered advice on my original post about my son going a full day at daycare without a diaper change https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/1o90bdl/child_left_in_the_same_diaper_for_65_hours_at/

UPDATE: We cancelled the reservation for the daycare to take him today, but I had planned to go in with my partner tomorrow to talk to the Encho sensei about it.

This morning, however, my partner received a call from the daycare. It was the same teacher she spoke to Friday evening, the teacher who assisted my son in the bathroom that afternoon and formerly claimed that she hadn't noticed his diaper was wet.

Firstly, she apologized, and asked about our son, if his diaper rash area was ok. (He is fine).

Then, she told us that she looked into the situation to try to understand what happened. According to her, the morning teacher in charge of my son until nap time said that his diaper was dry before the nap so she hadn't changed it.

Then, my son didn't take a nap as was planned (This is a common thing for my son so I'm not concerned about it; happens and home and his other daycare).

Apparently they grouped the kids they were watching into the groups of kiddos who *did* take a nap and those who *didn't* take a nap. These two groups had a diaper change at different times, and the teacher apologized that she missed his 'after nap' change because he was accidentally grouped with the kids who napped and it was overlooked.

Then, as for the reason for not changing the diaper before being picked up for the day, she explained the same situation that she had told us last Friday; my son had asked to go to the bathroom. Apparently he told them he had to poop. This teacher was assisting two 2-year-olds in the bathroom at the same time. After awhile when my son didn't have success with pooping, he apparently told her he was done sitting on the toilet, but that he still felt like he was going to poop. So, she decided to hold off on the diaper change until after he pooped, so as to not be wasteful of a fresh diaper. (This is a bit different from what she originally said that she didn't notice the diaper was wet).

Anyhow, I am happy she called us first to apologize. I suppose it is just an issue of the teachers being busy, not used to my son who is new, and perhaps just having a bad day. (This was the date of the Yochien information session, fwiw). My partner made a point to say that if our son goes an entire morning without wetting his diaper we'd like to be notified in his renraku book about it because we are concerned he is taking enough fluids in the day (he tends to avoid fluids when nervous).

As she called to apologize and gave further details, I don't know if it is necessary to speak to Encho sensei about it tomorrow (I will be going there anyhow has planned with my son). I do get a sense that they seem very busy at that daycare and perhaps don't have the best system for keeping track of kids.

I'm a teacher myself (of older kids), but I can certainly relate with the occasional lapse of getting two students confused for a moment when things are busy. Perhaps that is what happened in the bathroom while assisting the 2-year-olds with toilet training. We've decided to keep on with the narashi-hoiku at this place and just keep an eye on things in the coming weeks. We are hopeful that we will feel assured that it is ok to send him there for Yochien by the deadline. I can't help feeling a small bit of doubt and wavering a bit though. Thanks again to everyone who offered advice and experience.
