Hi, first time posting on Reddit but a lot of thing to say to prevent frustration:
• rent a car or motorcycle. You can only do it online but it takes only a few fours, not a week according to the website. This is a beautiful island but common transportation is really frustrating. • just enjoy.
To develop further, people there are really welcoming. I was there with a friend for one week at Sansui Naha with a nice onsen (surprising the first time but you could accommodate quickly, no judgment with Japanese people). A lot of car rental, izakayas and restaurants. And soapland, if you need to. Sakaemichi arcade is the thing to visit at night in my opinion, lot of lovely Izakayas with locals there, really different from daytime with only grandpas drinking beers at 2pm but you can join them for a lot of fun. If you want to visit islands nearby by ferries, book online or reallyyyyyyy early in the morning at Tomari, Naha. If not, you will only get the slow ferries and be frustrated not spending enough time on those beautiful beaches. We wanted to spend more time at Tokashiki but by taking slow ferry and the buses there + lunch we only had 1h30 to swim and snorkling. It’s even better to take a night there I think. A chill village with loving people. Pokémon center if you are a weeb. Go early by car, the shopping mall parking is fullll, wate of time trying to have a place and to get out. Please visit Kouri Island, with my friend, we spent only a few hours there, but we were lucky to see a traditional singer at the food court for free. Lots of grandmas and we even get invited to dance traditional dance, what a memory! It’s very chill and if you like roadtrips, plenty of cosy places to relax on the roads before. Finally a night in Nago seems to be really cool, a lot of younglings going to bars and even US military soldiers going to their favorites adresses. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we only went mostly in Naha (we were lucky to have time going to redroom and little rockers, very cool places to rave if you have energy) but renting a car was the opportunity (and frustration) to see that Okinawa has so much to offer.
Was my first time in Japan (wanted to share different things than Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka common trio) but now I feel I only want to come back there and don’t want to visit major cities anymore. I think I am in love with the island 😔 👉👈
Feel free to share your feelings here, keen to comment with you! (FYI I al M French here, perhaps with mistakes above but rn I am drunk in Shanghai 1 day after Okinawa hence the proof it haunts my thoughts)
