Am I understanding what happened with Trump in Tokyo correctly?

Trump arrives.

Trump says he's trying to "out box" China by meeting with all the leaders of smaller Asian nations around China.

Trump forces Japan to buy a bunch of out dated military junk and Ford F-150s from the US, which won't even fit on Japanese roads.

Trump signs some "We're so back" hats with PM Sanae Takaichi, right-wing nazi twitter goes wild.

Meanwhile, Sanae Takaichi and her side kick Kimi Onada, say they will deport all illegals and make migrants follow rules…

…while signing side deals that will bring in 12 million more migrants by the end of the decade, raising Japan's ethnically foreign population from 3% to 10%

…while signing another proposal to create a Japanese NSA-esque spy program that will Palantir-ify all of the data on Japanese citizens, setting Japan up for a dystopian future

…while Trump gets what he wants from China, which is lower tariffs, and then Trump goes back to ignoring Japan and pulling aid, leading Japan vulnerable to a Chinese economic take over as we see the yen crash from 150 to 300 against the dollar.

Am I understanding this correctly?

  1. The US is quickly en route to driving away its traditional allies. It won’t be immediate because most countries have responsible leaders who seek to minimize chaos, but give it 20 years and the damage will be evident. What’s the point of being allies with a country that acts like a predator? It’s also not just Trump. Many Americans support this. Next president could be a Democrat but what about 4 years later again?

  2. It’s gonna boil down to authoritarian China vs authoritarian West if the rightwing keeps gaining strength.

  3. Say what you will about the other items, but Japan desperately needs a foreign intel agency that doesn’t incompetently gets its citizens arrested in China for being informants (looking at you, PSIA) or can’t access intelligence broadly across the community because of all the agencies defending their rice bowls (leading to strategic surprise, sarin gas attacks style). The Japanese need to move into the 21st century, the post-WWII model of intentional intelligence agency fragmentation and neutering of authorities to prevent another Japanese Empire is no longer relevant.

  4. >Trump has complained that there are hardly any American cars in Japan and that the country’s vehicle safety standards are too strict.

from: [Ford’s enormous F-150 becomes unlikely part of Japan’s efforts to woo Trump – ABC News](https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/fords-enormous-150-part-japans-efforts-woo-trump-126924892)

Why is Trump is upset about Japanese pedestrians and kids not getting mowed down at crosswalks and parking lots by some lifted F150.

  5. One small pushback I have is, there was a misinterpretation of Takaichi’s statement “we need to work more” – she wasn’t referencing the Japanese people et al., she was saying “we” as in her administration including herself in service of the nation.

I’ll stand corrected if proven otherwise.

  6. I’d be curious to know where you got info on “side deals that will bring in 12 million migrants by end of the decade”. I haven’t seen that — just [warnings about what would happen](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/09/19/japan/politics/nippon-ishin-immigration-policy/#:~:text=Nippon%20Ishin's%20proposal%20states%20that,is%20critical%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20added) if Japan amassed a foreign population of 10%.

People are arguing for caps on immigration, which I get, but I don’t see any reporting that these deals are meant to bring in 12 million more migrants by end of decade.

The Spy Prevention Law stuff is creepy, no doubt, as is Takaichi, but I don’t know what it’s got to do with Trump.

  7. “…while signing side deals that will bring in 12 million more migrants by the end of the decade, raising Japan’s ethnically foreign population from 3% to 10%”

    Is this true?

  8. Can I get an article for the Japanese NSA-esque thing? I’m gonna need more proof for something this crazy.

  9. With whome was the side deal with 12 Million immigrants signed? Any info on that side deal, I cannot find it

  10. “…while signing side deals that will bring in 12 million more migrants by the end of the decade, raising Japan’s ethnically foreign population from 3% to 10%”

Got a source for this? Based if true!

  11. You’re not getting the last part right. The US has enlisted Japan in the economic warfare against mercantilist China. The US hasn’t protested the yen devaluation and will avoid putting any pressure. Japan’s central bank will keep rates low because they have to, due to the 250% of GDP debt. As the largest holder of US treasuries, Japan is encouraged to invest more in the US. But not necessarily treasuries. More equity investments on the onshoring of US manufacturing. Japan will make money. US will make money. Mercantilist China will be put more in a bind as the nations around the world begin to be forced to enact their own tariffs against China to protect their own domestic industry.

The stock markets on both sides have sniffed this out and am reacting to this positive development of a Japan that is aligned with current US ideals.

  12. Politicians will lie. They might phrase it as “negotiations” and “politics” but it’s all it is. They will say what’s necessary to avoid unnecessary tension or to please other nations’ leaders.

  13. For this part “…while signing another proposal to create a Japanese NSA-esque spy program that will Palantir-ify all of the data on Japanese citizens, setting Japan up for a dystopian future” are people protesting about this? Because this is a rather big problem.

  14. It’s actually truly impressive how you managed to get almost every single thing either completely wrong or wildly twisted!

  15. None of that you said is entirely true, typical sensationalist post, deporting illegals has been the norm even before Takaichi was in power, why are people so fixed up about this? You’re illegally in Japan you should be deported.
Ford trucks will fail to make sales in Japan so I don’t care about them, but then again I see a lot of G wagons in Tokyo so I wouldn’t be surprise to see f150s too.

You’re concerned about a dystopian society? But we are one, there are cameras every where in Tokyo, your phone gets earthquake alerts, you pay taxes or kiss goodbye to your permanent resident status, I mean I think Japan has a lot more surveillance than the US does at times.

  16. As someone in my first year In Japan. Everyone knows trump, people like him enough to wear his merch and say his slogan (even the students) and those not involved in politics see him as a neutral force.

The politicians in Japan are firmly anti immigrant but the mostly applies to India and China. If you aren’t from one of those countries you are looked upon favorably. Even my students today said something about China being bad no one wants to go there or see people from there.

Sure Japan’s migrant working force is essentially holding up Japans economy right now and without people from foreign countries their business sphere and educational sphere would collapse. Not to mention all their other industries I have no deeper knowledge on that rely on foreign workers or business.

The politicians in power trying to stop migrants and immigration are a small number of the total parliament Japan has and I’m not worried about it.

  17. sounds like a totally reasonable, unbiased, objective, both-sides explanation from someone who isn’t obsessed with themselves.
