Newspaper subscription rates fall to 50%; Internet news became the top source of daily news


TL;DR On Oct 11, The Japan Press Research Institute announced number of people subscribing to newspaper declined to 50.1%. The downward trend has continued since 2008 when the subscription rate was at 88.6%.

For the first time, Internet came out as the top source of daily news at 46.5% overtaking commercial television at 46.1%, NHK TV at 35.8%, newspapers at 33.4%, and radio at 9.2%.

When asked which media influenced their voting in the July Upper House election, 42.5% replied commercial television. However, in terms of age group, people in their 10s to 30s choose Internet (excluding social media)

among people in their teens through 30s, the internet (excluding social media) ranked first. Among people in their 20s, social media platforms such as X ranked higher than traditional media such as newspapers.
