Hello guys,
I’ll be attending Aoyama Gakuin University in Spring 2026 and was wondering if there are some less known things I should be aware of as an exchange student in Japan?
I’ve travelled through Japan before, so I already know quite some stuff, but I imagine living there has very different challenges.
Any help would be appreciated.
ありがとうございます!

Join a circle, take easy classes, and enjoy your time
Don’t bring much basic household goods. Just buy everything at Nitori or Daiso. Especially if you’re going for 6 months or less. The one thing I found worth the luggage space was a pillow. I’ve never found a comfortable Japanese pillow. Then trash the pillow at the end of your trip and fill the void in your luggage with souvenirs and snacks
Expect to be hanging out with other exchange students most of the time. Full time students usually have commitments such as a more intense course load (although this rly depends) and job hunting/internships so it’s pretty difficult to go out with them frequently. Basically ur gonna be in ur own exchange student bubble unless u rly try to go out of ur way to connect with the people here
There are cults here. Dunno why but they look energetic lately on getting new members.
Dun be too kind, trust people too much and give ur info out that easily.
