Tokyo District Court rules tweet as a “copyrighted work” and orders compensation for unauthorized reproduction


TL;DR On Oct. 9, Tokyo District Court ruled posting screenshot of a post in X without permission is a copyright violation and ordered the person who posted the screenshot to pay 400,000 yen.

Presiding Judge Masaki Sugiura ruled that the account image and post “reflect the author’s individuality and creative expression of thoughts and feelings,” thereby qualifying as copyrighted works. He ruled that posting a screenshot without getting consent constitutes copyright infringement.
