  1. JR East is the definition of enshitification. Every good thing this company is disappearing. If the new mascot is shit, I will use ICOCA that’s it.

  2. Awww! I love the Suica penguin. I bought a notebook and pen of him at a stationery store at one of the stations. An icon.

  3. I hope the other companies don’t follow suit. You’ll take my Nimoca meerkat and my Hayakaken… whatever that thing is from my cold, dead hands.

  4. “Let’s ruin a perfectly good mascot and replace it with something that nobody wanted. That’ll fix things!” – probably JR East Marketing team.

  5. Absolutely idiotic decision.
An unnecessary change, as Suica’s Penguin is quite a cute one.
I fear the new mascot might be a hideous one like Osaka expo showed.

What’s up with various JRs ending services under the excuse of ‘inprovement’… Dr Yellow being abolished, Hello Kitty Shinkansen run ending next year, Hallo Kitty Haruka to also revert to just the Haruka… now the Suica Penguin shock.

I hope there’s severe pushback and the Penguin stays as the mascot.

  6. Oh nooooooo! Now I’m not going to surrender my card at the airport to collect the refund after this Japan trip of mine.

  7. The artist who draws him has recently been making and selling an increasingly large amount of non JR related penguin merch, she even set up a small ‘Penguin Museum’ near Nagasaki where you can buy penguin paintings and ceramics for up to 900,000yen a pop! As someone else pointed out; the penguin character actually predates the introduction of the Suica card; so she probably has quite a tidy licensing agreement with JR. (I think she’s also responsible for one of the Yamato cat mascots)
