How to convince your parents to allow your child to participate in an exchange program at a Japanese high school?

My parents aren't at all open to the idea of me going on an exchange program to Japan, and I think they're more worried about my safety. They don't see the point either. I know myself, but I can't seem to express my own feelings. Help me, what concrete benefits can I mention, and what can I say to convince them (safety, what life is like there, etc.)?
