Does your income stay very similar regardless how long you’ve been working at your current company?

I've heard/read several times that, the only way to get a raise is to find a new job.

This is the 3rd time I saw a senior colleague quit due to similar reasons and I start to consider moving as well. Main reason was, despite quickly being promoted to manager just within 3 years (his 5th year when he quit), his base and annual income was almost still the same as other old/new hires in the company (around 400万), including myself. Probably only 7,000 yen difference per month due to “promotion” despite the total difference in responsibilities and pressures from the top.

I'm just wondering whether that is usually normal out there (everyone's income is very similar across the board), in other words, the income we got at the beginning will probably stay around that forever unless you go up really high in rank.

For the 4 years I work here, I only saw a raise 1 time, and that was similar across the board around 5,000 yen despite ranks and levels. Based on other senior colleagues, it’s also around that much during a raise in the past too.

I have a feeling this is probably just the place I work at. Is it better out there?
