For me, it was Christmas of 2009. I was a lonely Marine in Okinawa stuck in my second MySpace-induced situationship with a kansai-jin (yes, I’m old) and needed out. Swallowed my pride, signed up for Japan Cupid, and aggressively spammed women who had no profile pictures to cut through the competition. On only like my 9th try, I hit the jackpot – an attractive nurse who was willing to meet up. Fast forward, we’ve been married for 14 years and I’m a civilian living in Tokyo.
Reminiscing about the upcoming anniversary of my desperate gambit to escape loneliness made me wonder – how many of you all met your SO online or another way? Seems pretty much everyone in our social circle met online with a handful having met at the club or bar. I can’t imagine the latter scenario happening at all with people here being so silo’ed or in their own group. None were friends prior to dating or had shared hobbies initially, they just went straight to it.
