Studying Abroad in Japan Next Year – What Should I Be Doing Now to Prepare? (From the UK)

Hey everyone,

I’ve just been confirmed for a full-year study abroad placement in Nagoya starting September 2026 – August 2027, and I’m buzzing. I’m currently a second-year UK uni student and want to make sure I prepare properly instead of finding out too late that I missed something obvious.

For anyone who’s studied in Japan (or Nagoya specifically), or just knows the process well:

What should I be doing now to get ready?

Stuff I’m thinking about:

  • Passport validity — mine expires May 2027, so I assume I’ll need to renew it before going?
  • Language prep (I’m doing Duolingo but not sure how far that actually gets you)
  • Visas and documentation
  • Accommodation around Nagoya Uni
  • Phone/SIM card/bank account stuff
  • Anything you wish you’d sorted earlier

Any misconceptions UK students usually have about Japan?

Like:

  • Overestimating how much English people speak?
  • Thinking everything is super high-tech?
  • Assuming trains run literally perfectly on time?
  • Underestimating cost of living or social expectations?

Also: anything specific about Nagoya that people often overlook? I know it’s less touristy, a bit more laid-back, and big on industry/automotive.

Just want to hear from people who’ve done it and know what actually matters before going.

Thanks in advance!
