Staying in Shima Onsen Nakanojo area and hear a lot about bear sightings. Tried to go on a 2 hour hike up the mountain and saw all these signs saying turn back. Thoughts?

I played it safe and turned back but was that an overreaction? Other threads I’ve seen say it’s not actually a big deal but the signs seem serious
