Whats your favorite maki roll?

Id eat/try most everything in the sushi-verse. Over the years there’s always been that memorable “number one” in my rankings that has not been beat.

Spicy Scallop Roll from The Sushi House in Concord MA. (Been closed for a few years now). Despite its appearance maybe being questionable to some, this roll was a staple to my order after years of going there. On their last night prior to shutting the doors for good, we ordered one last hoorah round for table (as seen in pic).

Between the warm temperature baked scallop mixture topping that provided a melt in your mouth experience combined with the avocado roll underneath, it was a texture and flavor combo ill never forget. Some other places iterations of volcano rolls have come close, but this continues to hold that number one spot for me.

What’s yours?

  1. Spicy scallop roll is super delicious, my favorite variant is called Spicy Ocean here and it’s spicy salmon (not ground up) inside and topped with generous amount of spicy scallop and tobiko. The perfect little mouth bomb!

  2. I like my rolls more on the traditional side. Like tuna, salmon, and eel. Preferably with the nori on the outside. And absolutely none of that disgusting mayo based sauce that they smother all over the Americanized slop.

  3. This plating is…unappetizing.

Diamond in the rough Japanese restaurant in Terre Haute, Indiana (I’m as shocked as anyone is at this statement) called Umi Grill has a Seafood Combo roll that has been blowing my tits off every time I’m back there for 20+ yrs now. Everything they make is excellent and it’s honestly the best sushi place I’ve been. Their Nabeyaki Udon is my favorite.

Not that I’m special but I’ve lived in Indiana, Iowa, Florida, California, and Georgia and traveled extensively for work. Very good places off the beaten paths

  4. Hi OP, sorry you’re getting such heat for your favorite. In California I prefer salmon or uni and avocado. I’m allergic to mayo lol. In Japan, I like a ume shiso maki or the satanic natto maki as a pallet cleanser between temaki of fish with no sauce; one cool part of sushi in Japan is the variety, i.e. getting all sorts of different fish not just salmon, tuna, and hamachi. On Shikoku island they served nigiri of broiled scallops, it was awesome and probably about $3.

  5. Negitoro is my fave. Chopped tuna belly and scallions, it’s SO good. Simple but delicious.

  6. First I thought this was mystery tempura. Then some kind of baked oyster.

Looking closer was a mistake. Dog vomit really is an accurate descriptor. It’s such a sloppy, unpleasantly colored, textured mess. Oh I hate it! Bring back the sushi!

Oh hey right there was a question! Get rid of this and I’ll consider discussing actual food.

  7. I thank you.. I’m on tirzepatide, which is hard to go #2… this photo made my stomach gurgle and feel like I have bubble guts.

  8. I am going to have to trust it tastes good, but I straight up thought that was potato salad at first lol.

My favorite maki rolls are ume shiso and kappamaki!

  9. A classic Tuna maki or one of my favorites while not being very traditional is a salmon and cream cheese roll

  10. This looks so gross. However, after reading the description, I’d try it. I like volcano tolls specifically from one sushi place. I love scallops. If it were a little less soupy, it would look more appealing.

Edit: where is the wasabi ??

  11. This would be right at home on r/shittyfoodporn.

Sushi is supposed to be as much a feast for the eyes as it is the palate.
