  1. As to be expected consumers are baulking at paying such ridiculously high prices. The new 米大臣 + his JA cohort have overplayed their hands.

  2. At my local, I now see rice piling up in the bargain sale corner because people aren’t buying it anymore.

JA can truly go fuck themselves.

  3. I saw Calrose in my local super for basically half the price of Koshihikari and immediately bought 10 kg…

  4. A Japanese woman told me her husband is now in Germany and he saw Japanese rice in a supermarket, 5kg for 19,99€. Cheaper than in Japan. Because, there is competition. Rice from the US, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.

  5. “Apparently, bags of newly harvested rice are piled up in the back of supermarkets.
Milled rice deteriorates quickly and is generally discarded after about a month.

However, the reason they are hesitant to lower the price is that it would affect the price structure of other types of rice.
In particular, if they were to sell brand-name rice at a discount, it would disrupt the overall price range, so stores are cautious.

In some cases, farmers are clearing out their stock by selling it to employees at a discount before discarding it.
Farmers are struggling with what to do with the unsold new rice.”

So they toss perfectly fine rice rather than sell it at affordable prices. Got it got it
