Hi. I just came here in Japan with my boyfriend for work. I have an employer who is training me to become an English teacher, and my boyfriend is being trained as a driver or for work in the gemba. I’m currently here in Tokyo with my sibling, but my employer plans to bring us to Okinawa because that’s where he needs us. We told him that we prefer to stay in Tokyo, but he won’t agree.
My sibling and one of our aunts here in Tokyo keep telling us not to accept being sent to Okinawa because life is better here.. We’ve also heard many stories about people who moved to Okinawa but eventually left and returned to the city. They also want us to stay together in Tokyo in case of emergencies, and because part-time job opportunities are more accessible for us. Plus, our visa is only for one year, which makes the situation even more complicated.
I also asked one of my trainers if I could avoid being sent to Okinawa. He told me that it’s really up to my employer’s discretion. According to him, I can try staying in Okinawa for a year and then request to be transferred back to Tokyo if an opportunity opens up.
Because of all this, we tried applying to different companies so we could find other job opportunities and avoid being sent to Okinawa. But no one has responded yet, and we’re getting close to being transferred, so we’re both really struggling with this dilemma. Please help us weigh all the possible reasons to go to Okinawa or stay here in Tokyo. 🙏
