Everywhere i check on Google it says a Dubai/UAE International driving permit is valid in Japan.
But when I went to the driver's license examination center they told me it is not valid in Japan. But I can't find anywhere that says its not valid.
Does anyone have any insight into this?
The Dubai IDP is under the 1949 Geneva convention.. I'm sooo confused

Are you trying to drive with it or are you trying to use it to convert to a Japanese license without a test/the short-easy version of the test?
Because yes, it’s perfectly legal to drive with it. It is not however one of the countries that recognizes Japanese licenses for direct conversion or a “short/easier” version and Japan offers pretty much 100% reciprocity so blame Dubai/UAE not Japan.
In short you’ll have to take the full test just like a Japanese would. And Dubai/UAE are not on the list below:

Which seems to shoot my theory about reciprocity in the foot and says it’s because the NPA can’t verify they are actually compliant with the convention and the government has not responded to their inquiries.
Pretty sure Japan is also covered by the 1949 one. You might be good.
