Hey everyone,
I’ve recently moved into a small apartment in Tokyo and I work online teaching from about 8pm to 11:35pm. I use a headset, don’t play loud audio, and always try to keep my voice at a normal teaching volume.
The thing is, it is deathly quiet here – I can hear tiny sounds from outside (like someone coughing far away or sneezing), and I’m wondering if I’m disturbing my neighbours. I’ve never had noise complaints anywhere else, but Japanese apartments are known for being “quiet”, so now I’m second guessing every sound. Luckily the apartment next to me isn’t occupied and I’m at the end of the building so the other side there is nothing. Out my front door is an outdoor walkway. There is however someone directly underneath me.
I can never hear anyone else talk in the building, only people walking by which sounds like they have a megaphone due to it being so quiet.
Has anyone here done remote teaching from a Japanese apartment?
How sensitive are these buildings realistically?
I really don’t want to be that annoying foreigner who disturbs the locals.
Any advice or stories of your own are appreciated! Arigato!
