I know about Okaeshi culture but…

My Japanese asked to “borrow” 100,000¥ to return gifts to a buuuuunch or relatives.

I have an ALT job and currently studying Japanese to hopefully get a better job in the future.

I already pay literally almost everything in the apartment.

I said I’d pay her mom for her help if anything, but an extra 10man is just too much and now she’s asking for a divorce just because I don’t feel paying.

I really hate this aspect of Japanese culture. If they gave us weddings gifts, thank you, that’s it. To feel obligated to return every single one is annoying, they might as well not having given any money in the first place.

Thoughts?

Edit: I said it’s too much but not that I wouldn’t pay.
The issue was that at first I just ask “what’s it for” and she just stormed off and ignored me for a while.
