Driving Test for License Without School

I know It’s not generally recommended, but I’d really like to give the Japanese driving test for the license without attending the school a shot.

For context, I’ve never had a US license because I moved to Japan as a minor, so I’d be starting from scratch. However, I do have years of driving experience in Japan through a different type of license (SOFA) and have never been in an accident or pulled over. The aced the written and driving test from that school with a perfect score as well. I no longer have that license after career separation though, so I’m unfortunately going to have to go the Japanese license route to legally drive again.

I am here to ask advice from people who have successfully passed the test-out/no driving school route. I am willing to put in the time and effort to study, practice, etc. What part of the written test did you struggle most on? Is there questions about all types of vehicles (driving large trucks, motorcycles, etc.) or just your average car? What did you primarily use to study for the test? How long did you take to prepare? Do you use a given car or your own car?

Also, I know most people are going to recommend just going to driving school. Please be aware that I’d love to do that, but it just not a realistic option for me right now with my current schedule and location. 🙏
