In terms of QoL that can be afforded on that salary- what would the US equivalent be of a single earner taking home 8M JPY a year?
I don’t think comparing the dollar value is a good fit as someone on 50K USD in a HCOL/big city would not be living as well as someone on 8M JPY in Tokyo
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your responses – in terms of profile,
I am a dual US citizen that has no plans to return to the US. I will most probably return to the EU after a few years. In terms of accommodation I’ve lived in Hong Kong so I am very used to small apartments, a spartan 1 bedroom that’s around 35-40m2 would suffice. Being close to the city core is important to me however.
I am not a lavish spender. I prefer a local ramen joint to a fancy western restaurant, and same goes for bars/nightlife etc. Happy to crack a can of Strong Zero outside 7-11 rather than popping bottles in the club etc.
Income wise I was on 81K EUR gross in the Netherlands until September when I was laid off. After taxes and expenses I wasn’t left with much though given I was in a major city and rent was insane, not to mention grocery prices going up.
The plan would be to convert a chunk of my JPY income into EUR monthly and just keep my savings in EUR, along with my investments (stocks, ETFs) which I need to figure out how to transfer to Japanese IBKR.
