Thinking About Moving to Japan After My Vacation – Looking for Advice on Jobs, Visas, and Realistic Paths

Hey everyone,

I just got back from a vacation in Japan and honestly… it lit a fire in me. I’ve always dreamed of living there, and this trip made me want to seriously pursue it.

A bit about me:

I’m 28

I work in the IT field (currently an IT engineer)

I work for a Japanese company that has a location here in the States, so I’m somewhat accustomed to Japanese work culture already

I have 2–3 years of professional experience with several projects under my belt

I’m currently re-studying Japanese (I took classes back in university but I’m refreshing everything now)

I’m honestly fine with a lower salary if it means starting fresh and building a life there

I’m trying to understand what realistic routes I have for moving to Japan, and what chances someone like me might have.

Things I’d love advice on:

  1. How do people actually apply for jobs from overseas?

Are there specific websites or companies that hire internationally?

Do employers even consider applicants who aren’t living in Japan yet?

  1. Where should I start looking for IT positions?
Any job boards or agencies that have worked for you?

  2. Visa questions:

What type of visa would someone with IT experience qualify for?

What are the requirements?

How much does my Japanese level matter at the start?

I’m seriously considering this move because I want a change in my life, and Japan has always felt like the place I want to be. Any guidance—from people who moved already or are in the process—would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance!
