Learning the Osaka Train System Before I Move – Best Approach?

Hi everyone!

I know I’m a bit early since I’m not moving until next year, but I figured it’s a good idea to start learning how the train system in Japan works. I’ve been to Japan before, but I was guided by a local the entire time, so I didn’t really learn the system myself.

I’ve been trying to find good resources to learn, but it’s a bit overwhelming because it’s so complex. I’ll be living in Osaka, and from what I understand:

• The Midosuji Line (Metro) runs up and down through JR Osaka Station (Dotonbori to the South), which seems to be the main hub.

• The Osaka Loop Line (JR) circles around the city. Has a stop by Osaka Castle.

Seems like I should have a general idea of where I’m going using this system of relative location. But, my question is: what is the best way to learn this system? Should I:

1. Start by memorizing the major stations and use that as a framework (like I’ve been doing) and, figuring out other smaller stations relative to those?

2. Or is it worth memorizing every stop on each line? (For instance Osaka Loop line has stops here and there, so forth).

I hope that makes sense. I’d really appreciate any advice or strategies that helped you learn the train system efficiently.

Thanks so much!
