
JR East will start running a cargo-only Shinkansen on March 23, 2026.
- Converted from E3 “Tsubasa” trains, all seats removed for flat cargo floors.
- Can carry up to 17.4 tons (~1,000 boxes) per trip.
- Depots handle loading/unloading with automated vehicles.
- Weekday trips: Morioka → Tokyo, linked with E5 “Yamabiko” trains.
- International expansion planned with JAL Group and potentially Japan Post.
