Choosing my University

Hi everyone. I am planning to apply to Canada and Japan, as I am Canadian Japanese. I am interested in Econ/Business. For Canada I am interested in Rotman at University of Toronto, Ivey at Western, and Smith at Queens. I am also looking at Keio at Pearl, PSE at Waseda, and Law/business at ICU. What are your thoughts deciding between going to Japan and Canada. I don't know where I want to work yet. I feel like once I have a degree from a good school in Japan, my career prospects are higher in Japan than in Canada. But I am more limited (in that I will stay in Japan).

What are your Japanese language skills like? As in, what are they really like?

All the programs you mention in Japan are English language programs (although ICU does offer a bilingual program with alternating semesters of English and Japanese).

If you want to work in Japan, you need to have good formal Japanese – the sort of Japanese-language skills that enable you to write business documents, present at meetings, understand business discussions. If you don’t already have that level of Japanese, it’s not going to be easy to acquire it while you’re studying an English-language program. You will have to be determined and disciplined.

Also, bear in mind that although Japan has lower living costs than Canada, it also has low wages and a poor work-life balance.

To be frank, I think a degree from a good Canadian university will be more versatile and advantageous than an English-language degree from a Japanese university. Also, a law degree from ICU won’t allow you to practice in Canada.
