Is it a Japanese thing to talk about someones faults right in front of them?

Whenever I meet people my wife knows for the first time. She will talk about me to her friends about things I might not be good at or my faults like maybe I take too long to get ready or I'm my pace. Or the people I meet with her might ask me or make a comment about my faults. Like what the hell? I know in the states that would be really rude at least among the people I know.
