I just started living in Japan so there are many cultural aspects I’m still not accustomed to; one thing I’ve been noticing is when I enter restaurants/izakaya, staff are very welcoming with enthusiastic greetings. But when I ask practical questions after service (like ‘betsubetsu dekimasu ka?’ or ‘kaado wa tsukaemasu ka?’), the responses (e.g. just a いや、できない!) feel much more direct brief, dry, and almost rude at times when you’re so used to the habitual politeness. Is this just normal professional communication style in Japan?
