Highlights:
"The Chinese government likely feels emboldened in chastising Takaichi over Japan's stance in a Taiwan contingency because there is a brewing U.S.-China tactical detente unfolding at the summit level"
To help stabilize Tokyo's relationship with Beijing, Takaichi must first strengthen the unity of the Japan-U.S. alliance….Since Trump's return to power, however, a previously unthinkable form of diplomacy has emerged worldwide in dealings with his White House: overt flattery and unabashed efforts to curry favor with the American leader
It may be unseemly, but it is not entirely indefensible. Few leaders are as self-centered and fiercely competitive as Trump. Given the risks of provoking him, placation can sometimes be the more prudent course.
Indeed, Europe has reaped tangible benefits from avoiding direct confrontation.
Takaichi opted for a similar approach…For the moment, the overture appears to have worked. Contrary to expectations Tokyo had formed based on prior signals from Washington, Trump made no new demands during the meeting regarding defense issues or investment in the U.S.
Still, this may prove to be merely the calm before the storm. The Trump administration could well confront Japan with difficult demands in the months ahead. Tokyo will need to begin building tangible diplomatic achievements in its dealings with Washington.
The real test lies in how much Takaichi can persuade Trump to commit to Asia's defense.
