Found myself in a slightly mortifying situation – any advice would be appreciated.
I usually get a text to pay my rent by the 15th, which I've been doing for the entirety of my time in Japan.
There was a slight hiccup this month in which I didn't receive a text, so I emailed the rental guarantee company about it (as the rental agency do not handle matters related to rent payments), and they kept making references to 'late payment' in their replies. I was a bit confused, and after a bit of explanation, it actually turns out I've been paying rent late every single month…?
It turns out my rent's due on the 27th, I obviously do not pay it (since I don't get notified until much later), and apparently the texts are reserved for late payment (which is not specified anywhere on the notifications I get asking me to pay).
I went through the rental process with my work supervisor at a Japanese real estate agency – obviously, not every detail was translated fully, and I'm now absolutely horrified at my behaviour. There's never been a money issue – I simply pay my rent when I'm notified. I was just unaware of the aforementioned.
I've apologised profusely, and asked the rental guarantee company to pass on my apologies to the landlord/if there's any way I can contact to apologise personally (I've never had any contact with the landlord), but I'm additionally worried since I'd like to continue living in my current apartment and worried that this would stop me from doing so.
Aware this is a mess of my own making, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
