PSA (?) “When renewing a Zairyu card’s existing Residence Status, one’s Passport can be expired.”

Dear Dunan and everyone:

Are you all sure this is true?

"For renewing an existing status of residence: you don't need any validity on your passport; your passport can have expired and you can still renew your zairyu card, as long as you can present your unexpired zairyu card (together with your expired passport)."

https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/q32xwo/comment/hfpeqzs/

For example, if one currently has a 5-year "Spouse of a Japanese citizen (and parent of 4 Japanese citizens)" Status of Residency, which one will renew by September 2027 (by submitting the paperwork in July 2027), but one's American passport is only valid until June 2027, is the above altruistic and confidently-written statement-of-fact shared by the intelligent and helpful professor Dunan actually true?

I would love to hear some actual successful first-hand personal-experience anecdotes, from Dunan and all JapanLife community members, to confirm the fact that passport renewal (though highly-recommended) is indeed surprisingly legally OPTIONAL when renewing one's current Zairyu status of residency. (As one might simply plan to stay in Japan long-term/forever, and thus has less motivation to spend the time/money/energy renewing one's passport before a Zairyu renewal.)

Gratitude for all altruistic sharing of such successful experiences, to increase confidence in passport renewal being indeed optional. Thanks!
