First timer here! My partner (39) and I (38) have 12 days in late January into February planned. Hotels and a few restaurants and tours already booked. Looking for tips on if anything may sound skippable or ill advised to give us more time for rest and free discovery. Or if I'm missing something obvious.
No trains booked yet. Do we need to book in advance? I prefer to keep the times flexible.
Also we'll be there during Setsubun holiday. Will shrines and temples be super (too) crowded?
We like food, history, nature, cats, books, hiking, and know we will love onsen and pretty shrines/temples. Not super into anime, shopping, museums. Not willing to wait in long lines for restaurants.
We like to start mornings slow, and are not big on nightlife. It will also be cold. So we’re okay with packed days and then resting from dinner time onwards. Still, I fear the itinerary is too packed and doesn't allow enough time for relaxation and discovering unplanned stops. We booked nice hotels and want to enjoy them. Anything too overrated or skippable here?
Day 1, arrival in Tokyo
– Arrive 9pm at HND
– Straight to sleep, hotel onsen, or short walk to Akihabara and eat if hungry
Day 2, full day in Tokyo
– Imperial Palace Gardens (5 min from hotel)

Day 7, full day in Kyoto (hotel in Gion)
