if my parents leave Japan, do I have to leave too?

I’m confused about my immigration status and wanted to ask for clarification.

I’ve lived in Japan for most of my life. I went to school here from around 2nd grade to 6th grade, then lived in the US for a few years, and later returned to Japan. I finished high school here, and now I’m in my early 20s, working part-time, paying taxes, and still living with my parents.

My visa status is 定住者 (Long-Term Resident). I renew it every year, but I usually submit my renewal together with my parents and just bring the documents Immigration asks me for.

Recently, a coworker (also foreign) told me that if my parents leave Japan permanently, I would also have to leave, because my visa is supposedly based on them. That confused me, since I’m already an adult and working, but I understand that my renewal has been handled together with my parents so far.

So I wanted to ask:

If my parents leave Japan permanently, does that automatically affect my 定住者 status?

Is 定住者 considered independent, or is it still tied to my parents if I renew together with them?

If my parents leave, would Immigration expect me to change to another status, like a work visa?

I’d like to stay in Japan longer but I’ve mostly hung out with Japanese people around me, so conversations about resident cards, visa categories, and immigration rules almost never came up. Because of that, I honestly never thought to look deeper into how this works until now.

Edit: I’m also planning to be independent in a few years and get a full time job
