I am originally from europe and have been to ski slopes all over along with in canada and america. A mandatory helmet law came into effect in my home country recently, but even before then the majority of people wore helmets on the slopes. In canada and america too.
I've been going snowboarding here for several years now in ski slopes in Hokkaido and Aomori, the majority of people are not wearing helmets. Most people just slap on a beanie and think that will save them from falls onto icy snow or trees or rocks.
I write this because yesterday I witnessed a boy in front of me catch the snow on his board doing a turn and slammed his head full speed, back-first into frozen snow. I called ski patrol for him while his father and mother caught up to him, and surprise they weren't wearing helmets either. Not that a helmet would have let him walk away without injury, but the science is there for injury mitigation.
There seems to be serious lack of promotion of helmet usage in this country in general (esp for bicycles) let alone just on the ski slope, are there organizations promoting this in this country that one can donate to?
