Hello. My current visa expires this august. I am starting a new job on March 1 that is under a different visa status, so need to have my status changed soon. When I apply for that, will it also be considered as a visa renewal? Or will i have to do that in august again?
When you change visa status do you get an entirely new residence card and therefore the new start of visa date of 1/3/5 years?
also, any days of the week you think are least busy for Osaka immigration office?
Thanks for any info!

Yes the status change will come with a new period of stay and a new card. You’ll want to get your application in fast though, it could take them over a month to process it.
Mondays are busy and afternoons are generally longer, especially if you get there before the lunch break and have to wait through it.
Different visa type is completely new card and time frame. Your old visa status basically doesn’t exist any more.
Same visa type is an extension and extends from the expiration of the current card you have.
Either option requires a new card.
My experience with Osaka immigration has otherwise always been very fast. Unless it’s very late in the day I’m usually in and out in less than an hour, and the turn around for visa outcome is average about 11 days for the 3 times I’ve done it (1 time changing visa type and 2 times extension). I had all documents ready and they never asked for further info.
Pro tip: they have glue and scissors available to borrow at the visa reception desk and they were more than polite when I asked if I could borrow them, and they have a self-photo booth. Once you know that it makes the stuff you need to do and prepare beforehand a lot more simple.
