Stories of the Yamanote Line

It's 11:01pm on a Thursday night.

Finished a nomikai and was going back home.

Dragging my heavy ass luggage into the yamanote sen train.

And I see a grape juice stained floor.

And then a guy practicing kungfu, like he's the next dragon warrior, stepping all over the juice on the floor.

What are some of your stories of the Yamanote sen?

  1. Drunk after a nomikai, last train back to shinjuku, slammed my head real hard on the door, train was dead silent after that, got a massive concussion on my head

  2. Well , once i saw blood in similar condition as grape fruit and i dint board that car

  3. Oh some guy jumped into the tracks right in front of me and his body parts broke into parts right in front of me. Still remembered it after so many years.

Thought i ll get ptsd instead i felt nothing

  4. I saw a grown ass dude wearing only underwear and a jacket on a train once long time ago though

  5. This just came back to me now but I once saw a puddle of barf on the train floor and false teeth on top of it. I think it was from the old man sitting in front of it. Think it was the Marunouchi line though.

  6. I probably made a whole car hate me because I was carrying a huge suitcase from Haneda to Ikebukuro last Friday night. I’m just visiting, and was not thinking at all about the weekend TGIF crowds. šŸ™

  7. Someone had a fresh wound (maybe kitchen knife) and wrapped it in a towel and was on the train maybe going hospital. The blood started dripping all over where he was standing. Someone handed him one of the tissues people give to you on the street. I got off the next stop, but it looked like a crime scene.

  8. I can’t remember which line it was, but coming home after a friend’s wedding watched two different people on their phones not paying attention sit directly in vomit – they didn’t pick up on the fact that there was clearly a reason there was an entire half of a section of seats empty when all the others were full.

  9. Warning: gross

One night taking a train from Ueno to Akihabara a university aged guy (alone) was clearly drunk, hunched over on the seat, and eventually projectile vomited all over the ground. What really sticks with me was that he just got up and slid out of the door when we arrived at Akihabara station.

  10. On a rainy day, i heard a guy across from me start humming the Song of Storms from Ocarina of Time. Quality moment!

  11. Weirdest thing I have seen was an African dude high on god knows what, walking through the train crying to himself while wearing a bed sheet and dragging a teddy bear on a leash…

  12. Was sitting on the bench and in the middle of the fight with the final boss then a guy came to me and asked if I was lonely then we went to the conbini and grabbed some beers.

  13. Two middle aged *very* drunk Japanese people dry humping each other by the Marunouchi turnstile in Shinjuku station. I mean they were really going at it.

  14. It was late, and I was heading back from Shibuya the night after Halloween. The train was absolute chaos..reeking of alcohol and some other unidentifiable substance.
A guy stumbled in, completely out of it, carrying a briefcase. The moment he got on, he practically threw the briefcase under one of the seats, almost hitting someone. The whole carriage gasped. Then he staggered forward, clearly barely conscious.
Unfortunately, the seat next to me was empty, so he made a beeline for it, misjudged completely, and instead of sitting down, landed one entire butt cheek on my thighs. šŸ™‚
I got off the seat so fast he nearly toppled onto the floor. Lol

  15. saw some dude PASSED OUT at like 8 am on a saturday morning. his friends had to completely drag his basically lifeless body off the train. he was fully laid out on the platform for like 2 or 3 minutes, and finally woke up enough to stand up and wobble around before projectile vomiting all over the ground.

  16. Full train car, everyone going home dressed in salaryman type clothes, quietly looking at their phones. And then one guy wearing only tighty whitey underpants going “YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH” the whole ride. Almost no one looked at him, and no one told him to stop.

  17. I saw a guy in a nice suit (salaryman) picking his nose and wiping his boogers on the cloth seats. I was fuming inside. Like why.

  18. Eve of Halloween (I think it was back in 2017) at Shibuya station. Some guy wearing a PokeStop costume darted off the platform, followed by a small mob in various costumes trying to spin his PokeStop circle.

  19. Getting on to a Shinagawa-bound train at Shibuya at 6:45am on a Thursday and wondering why nobody was sitting down on one of the benches, making it that much crowded.
Somehow craned my neck high enough to see a man stripped to just underpants sound asleep laying the entire length of the seats on that side and nobody trying to wake him up.

I already hated that commute but I was hotter than fish grease that morning.

  20. An older man dressed in traditional bavarian clothes. As a bavarian myself I was quite surprised.

  21. Late night, right before the trains stop running.

I also see the whole floor of a train drenched in grape fruit, a MASSIVE amount. Alas, it’s actually wine that was vomited by a lady nearby, shamefully covering her face. People are scarily running away from the puddle.

That was a really gnarly one…

  22. Watched as a group of salarymen quietly got off at their stop, cackling, then proceeded to knock on the window to wake up their friend who they had left behind. They all pointed and laughed as the guy on board looked panicked, stuck on the train as it rolled away. One of the funniest pranks I’ve ever witnessed.

  23. Weirdest thing that happened to me, was sitting in the Yamanote, car not particularly full, a few people standing, was just looking at my phone and at one stop an asian dude covered in tattoos silently walks by, stops in front of me and opens his palm to show me a coin (50 or 100 yen, can’t remember). I was confused and didn’t know what to say, before I got a chance to react he does a gesture with his other hand (that I later interpret as in ā€œgive me moneyā€). I remained still, just trying to connect my brain and as quickly and as silently as he appeared, he just walks away. Never met anybody who had a similar experience in my 10+ years here in Tokyo. Somebody in here maybe?

  24. 5am, trying to go to work. A drunk ossan is lying on the ground by the door like a starfish. 1000 yard stare salaryman enters, stares at the sleeping guy for a few seconds, grabs him by the scruff and starts dragging him out onto the platform.
*Pig squeal noises* Ossan won’t go out without a fight, but eventually ends up tossed on the platform.
Salaryman re-enters blank face and sits down quietly.
Only a small snail trail of unknown liquid remains.

  25. Guy about fifty years old sits on the ground. Takes out from his backpack several sneakers

    And just re-laced them.

  26. Two years ago, saw a older man maybe in his 50’s wearing a maid costume with stockings with an umbrella waiting on the Shinkansen platform in Osaka

  27. Regular day on the train. An elderly man sitting in the back of the car with a tall thin rectangular cloth case between his knees. I don’t think anyone noticed but there was definitely a hunting rifle in it.

  28. I boarded the last car fairly early on a Saturday that was fairly empty. Laid out on the floor stomach down and completely sprawled out was a heavily tattooed middle aged man with several piercings. He had a small pile of vomit in front of him. I moved to the next car.

  29. This was many years ago. Tw violence:

Fight broke out on the Yamanote heading to Shinagawa, some elderly dude lecturing a young dude probably in his 30s about manners. Young had bumped old and had apologized but old didn’t like the tone of it and was just laying into young who was like ā€œI said sorry what’s your problemā€. Eventually they were grabbing each other’s shirts and started punching as the train spilled out at Shinagawa. Young knocked old down, kept punching, now in a blind rage, beat old’s face to a bloody pulp and kept doing it even after old was limp. Bystanders on the platform were just watching shocked at first but then young tried to leave. People grabbed and held him. Station staff and cops came, led young away. Old man died. It’s something I can’t forget.

  30. Random drunk old guy started talking to me. After we became friends he called the ENTIRE of his company’s group chat on video chat to show how nice I am.

Turned out he owns the company and his employees were so used to his random act. They politely apologized to me but we enjoyed conversations.

  31. Mejiro to Ikebukuro.

Two dudes, one older salaryman and a 30 to 40 year old punkish dude were fist fighting, like going really crazy. They pushed each other off the platform at Ikebukuro and kept fighting, pushing, shoving, punching, pulling their backpacks and then backed off like nothing happened… I was like???

  32. This is odayku line, but I saw an old man fall down about 25 steps on to the lower platform. Cracked his whole head and blood was everywhere. I stoop and waited for my express train which was coming on about 8 minutes. They took him on a stretcher and had all the blood cleaned up before my train even arrived.

  33. Early evening. Poor girl is dressed up nicely for a date or something. She is sitting on the end near the door.

As the train lurched to a stop at Shinjuku, some drunk idiot loses both his balance, and then the contents of his stomach.

Lands in her hair, her lap, and her expensive looking handbag. Total disaster. It’s disgusting and she starts screaming.

Bastard just stumbles out the door. He was barely conscious.

  34. Saw a woman on the Chiyoda line (7-8ish) with a “lady mark” starting on her dress. Before I could discreetly let her know so she could get off and clean up, a drunk salary man wipes his hand up the bloody backside of her dress and calls her dirty. Loud enough so the whole car could hear.

I felt so terrible for her and immediate hatred for him.

  35. A woman in her twenties who started to use her hair for flossing her teeth.

    Otherwise perfect business attire.

Another one is a guy who was pulling out his beard and eating the hairs.

  36. I’m so glad my line is sort of out of the way of rush times but I’m moving to Tokyo soon and we will HAVE to use the Chuo line to function so now I’m scared of what I may see in the future

  37. A drunk office worker puking into an umbrella bag. I guess it was the only container he had. It was like an elephant trumpeting, if the elephants trunk was made of vomit.

He managed to contain it all, so good job

  38. Was on the last train back from Shinjuku on a Saturday night. Drunk dude comes in with a can of strong zero, then proceeds to try and open it when the train starts moving. Cut open his hand somehow and his only response was “やばっ…” Then proceeded to wipe off his bleeding hand on the door lmao
