Day trip on the way from Kyoto to Tokyo

I’m currently in Kyoto and heading to Tokyo this weekend so far it’s been fun but I definitely want to stop by at a town on the way back to Tokyo and see something calmer and different somewhere that isn’t swarmed by tourist. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to stop or go to instead of just directly taking the Shinkansen to Tokyo.
