My wife and I spent approx 3 weeks doing the usual first timer trip through Japan a couple of years ago. This time we will be visiting for about 2 weeks from late September onwards and want something a bit more off the tourist path. We will spend a few days in Tokyo so it’ll probably be about 10 days in either the north or the south.
We are debating Kyushu vs Hokkaido. Kyushu seems awesome but we have some small concerns about weather particularly the chance of a typhoon.
Hokkaido seems similarly interesting but, whilst I’m willing to drive, I’d rather not and Hokkaido seems best explored by car.
We are pretty active and approximately 50 yrs old. Prefer nice food and beautiful landscapes to nightlife. Ideally we’d do some hiking but on the more mild end of the scale. We like canyoning and water activities. We are from a warm weather city, so heat and humidity aren’t much of a deterrent.
So I’m interested in thoughts from people who have been to those areas in September. Any advice?
